Maldives is a dream destination.

From Tokyo I took an Emirates flight through Dubai, from where it is around 4 hours to Male. Emirates allows you to stop over for free in Dubai so if you are not keen on long flights the best is to take a day or two in Dubai, and continue later to Male.

When leaving Tokyo in late October I checked the weather forecast and my iphone was firm on a rain for the upcoming 10 days, yet Maldives seems to be a country where the weather predictions do not really apply. Through the 10 days it was sunny, with small rain at night or few minutes of rain during the day, and the rest of time we enjoyed a perfectly blue sky with few clouds and a lot of sun.

So even during the rainy season you will enjoy your stay, and a bit of rain will come as a refreshing break.

Once you reach Male, and depending where you are going next there are various modes of transportation – speedboats, see planes, national planes etc. We took the 1AM flight from Dubai landing in Male before 8AM. After a short wait in the lounge, another local plane and speedboat we reached our destination – postcard-pretty Baa Atoll, and its luxury retro-themed resort Finolhu.

If you are in for an uber-instagrammable, pastel colored atmosphere and the vintage phones that call exclusively for champagne it is a pure paradise. By the pool the music plays all day long, everything is colorful and playful yet ultra-luxurious.

What do you need to pack for your stay in Maldives?

– sunscreen and several swimsuits

– good books on your kindle

– sunglasses ( a few pairs )

– a set of aftersun moisturizers and some minimal evening make-up

– hats and baseball caps

– Pocari Sweat powder (to replenish your electrolytes)

– underwater camera or a go pro ( you will want to take pictures of the coral reef underwater world)

– flipflops

– snorkeling mask and shoes ( despite their strange look the full face masks do amazing job, and yes the reef can be harsh on your feet)

– dollars (but in resorts you can pay everything with your credit cards, and apart from the hotel stores carrying some necessities and souvenirs there is not much of a chance to encounter a shopping center on your island)

– cover ups and loose clothes especially for the airport

– summer dresses for the evening

– t-shirts, skirts and shorts

– you can take a pair of heels but there will be sand everywhere
